The University of Illinois Hospitals and Health Sciences Systems-Chicago is helping train otologic (ear) surgeons in Ethiopia. Collaborating with Addis Ababa University teachers and graduates, Dr. Redleaf has presented the first weeklong training session for Ethiopian otolaryngologists, based in a rural underserved area. Access to the Grarbet Eye and ENT Specialty Hospital in Butajera Ethiopia was provided by Dr. Redda Tekle Haimonot, its founder and medical director. Pre-screening and counseling of patients was provided by Dr.s Nega Kiros and Girma Tesseme. Participants in the December 30,2012 through January 4, 2013 session were Dr.s Kiros, Tessemme, Redleaf and Zemene. Thirty operations were performed, along with pre and postoperative discussion of surgical technique. Dr. Redleaf delivered 5 formal lectures. Feedback from the spokespeople for the Butajera area was very positive, the patients were very happy with their access to ear care, and the otolaryngologists felt they had increased their surgical skills and confidence.
