Irritant contact dermatitis can be caused by anything that irritates your skin, including solvents, detergents, soaps, plants, pesticides, and some forms of dust. Allergic contact dermatitis reactions are triggered when your skin interacts with an allergen like medications, cosmetics, poison ivy, or pollen, either directly specialize in the treatment of a wide range of skin conditions, or by ingesting or inhaling it. When the cause of an outbreak is unknown, doctors can perform a patch test of multiple irritants and allergens on unaffected skin to determine the cause. While both types of contact dermatitis usually come in the form of an itchy rash that can be treated with cortisone ointment or antihistamines, frequent scratching can cause infections when bacteria or fungi creep into openings in the skin. Not everyone reacts to allergens. However, some people become allergic to something that they had previously tolerated for many years.
