VIEWS FOR 20/20 by Dr. Mark Skowron CHILDHOOD AMBLYOPIA Amblyopia, or "lazy-eye," is the most common vision problem found in children. Amblyopia occurs when the eye experiences partial vision loss because the brain is sending the wrong signals to the eye, causing the brain to favor the other eye. Other eye conditions can lead to amblyopia, including astigmatism (imperfection in the curvature of the cornea or lens), strabismus (imbalance in the position of the eyes), and nearsightedness or farsightedness. Amblyopia is the most common cause of permanent vision impairment in both children and adults. If not treated in early childhood, amblyopia can cause permanent vision impairment in the affected eye during later teen years and adulthood, making early-childhood vision screenings imperative. To schedule an appointment, please call SKOWRON EYE CARE. A vision check is especially important if there's a family history of crossed eyes, childhood cataracts or other eye conditions. We can accurately assess the health and vision of toddlers as young as one year by using our portable autorefractor, digital eye chart, and retinal camera. Children can watch their favorite cartoons on our digital eye charts. At Skowron Eye Care, your 20/20 vision is our mission. P.S. An estimated two to three percent of the population suffers from amblyopia. SKOWRON EYE CARE 370 N.
