VIEWS FOR 20/20 by Dr. Mark Skowron and Dr. Michelle Skowron EYEGLASS LENS MATERIALS It used to be that all eyeglass lenses were made of glass. But glass lenses are heavy and they break easily, so they are no longer widely used. Now there are several types of plastic lenses available, including CR-39, polycarbonate, Trivex, and high-index plastic lenses. Each type of plastic has different qualities. The refractive index indicates how quickly light will move through the lens. Generally, the higher the refractive index, the thinner the lens and the more efficiently it refracts light. The abbe value tells how much chromatic aberration the lens produces. Lenses with a low abbe value may create a halo around lights. Lenses with an aspheric design are thinner and flatter and made to produce less unwanted magnification. The experienced staff at SKOWRON EYE CARE makes sure you choose the right styles and lens options so you have with the lightest, thinnest, glasses possible. We have been providing personal, cutting-edge eye care for patients in the Western suburbs since 1983. Experience, commitment to technology, and a genuine concern for patient welfare enable all of our doctors and our highly qualified staff to work together as a team to consistently deliver quality, affordable eye care. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. There are several lens treatments that can be added to eyeglasses such as an anti-scratch coating, an anti-reflective coating, UV-blocking treatments, and photochromatic treatments (lenses darken automatically when exposed to UV rays).
