VIEWS FOR 20/20 by Dr. Mark Skowron and Dr. Michelle Skowron PRESBYOPIA: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Presbyopia is not an eye disease; it is a natural part of the aging process in which people, typically over age 40, begin to have trouble with their close vision although their distance vision remains unchanged. It is not the same as farsightedness. Presbyopia occurs because the eye's lens becomes less flexible over time, causing blurry vision. Farsightedness occurs when the eyeball's shape is irregular and causes a refractive error (light bends through the lens incorrectly). Symptoms include blurred vision at a close distance, needing to hold reading material at arm's length for focus, and headaches and eye fatigue after work or reading sessions. Presbyopia is common and easily treatable with corrective lenses, although there is no permanent correction. The symptoms of presbyopia are ALSO the same for many other eye/systemic conditions. One should not attempt to self-diagnose by simply going to the drugstore and buying magnifying glasses. Magnifiers may also cause headaches. The staff and eye doctors at SKOWRON EYE CARE may ask you a number of questions to help determine the best avenue of treatment. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. Bifocals and progressive lens eyeglasses are good choices for people with presbyopia. SKOWRON EYE CARE 370 N.
