VIEWS FOR 20/20 by Dr. Mark Skowron and Dr. Michelle Skowron ALL ABOUT ASTIGMATISM O Astigmatism is a common vision condition in which a person has blurry vision when viewing both close-up and distant objects. It can occur in combination with nearsightedness and farsightedness, but it isn't the same as having nearsightedness and farsightedness at the same time. Astigmatism results from an imperfection in the eye's curvature, in which either the cornea (the front surface of the eye) or the lens inside the eye have mismatched curves because one is round like a ball and the other is egg-shaped, which causes blurry vision. Astigmatism may be present at birth or develop later in life. It may not affect vision enough to require correction. Treatment options include corrective lenses and surgery. Astigmatism is not considered an eye disease, just a normal variation in the shape of the eye. The degree of astigmatism will be determined during the examination. Some may need to use a correction for distance only, or just for reading. Some may need to wear a correction all the time. To schedule an appointment, please call SKOWRON EYE CARE. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. Astigmatism develops due to an imperfection in the curvature of the cornea while nearsightedness and farsightedness occur because of an imperfection in the curvature of the eye's lens.
