VIEWS FOR 20/20 by Dr. Mark Skowron and Dr. Michelle Skowron PEDIATRIC EYE EXAMS Early eye problems can affect lifelong vision. Although pediatricians routinely perform limited eye exams, it is recommended that children have a comprehensive eye exam by the time they are six months old to make sure their eyes are developing properly. A second exam should take place before preschool and another before kindergarten in children that don't show any signs of eye problems. Exams are even more important when a child has a family history of eyesight issues. Because babies can't read vision charts, the eye doctor will test their pupil response to light, have them fixate and follow on a moving object, and use cards that are blank on one side and lined on the other to test preferential looking. At SKOWRON EYE CARE, we can accurately assess the health and vision of toddlers as young as one year by using our portable autorefractor, digital eye chart, and retinal camera. Early diagnosis of amblyopia is critical to prevent lifelong vision loss. Head turning, eye crossing, eye rubbing, squinting, or sitting close to the TV, can all be indicators of potential vision disorders. We make eye exams fun by showing your kids favorite cartoons on our digital eye charts. All kids leave smiling with a "goodie bag." At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. At your child's eye exam, report any frequent eye rubbing or blinking, difficulty maintaining eye contact, or poor tracking skills. SKOWRON EYE CARE 370 N.
