Q- How do probiotics work to create health? A- High cell counts of Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus strains of bacteria colonize and compete for space in our colons and prevent the overgrowth of not so friendly microorganisms such as yeasts, fungal and other pathogenic bacteria that cause disease. Q- How many cells live in the biome (colon)? A- There are 400 to 1,500 different microorganisms that add up to 100 trillion. They are dying and reproducing every 20 to 40 minutes from birth until the end of life or 72 times each day. These diverse cells we acquire from mom during birth, breastfeeding and by mouth from the environment until a year old are "banked" in the appendix. This family of microorganisms are recognized as allowed to stay for life to repopulate the colon should we lose them with severe diarrhea. Probiotics made in a factory environment do not have the genetics to permanently colonize in the colon so we need to continue to swallow them. Usually after stopping a probiotic for 14 days we have lost their benefit of occupying space and competing with all those bad microorganisms and disease comes back. A key fact is at age 50 until end of life the bifidus which is the #1 micro starts to decline allowing for the bad micros to gain space and deteriorate a healthy immune function with higher chance of diseases. There are 6 other events that also tip the scales away from health. See more at glenellynpharmacy.com for the Synbiotic Therapy document under Consultations / digestion.
